that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life
when he raised Christ from the dead.
(It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!)

But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much,

All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and
inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were
subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else.

You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the
devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world.
He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God.

Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins.

And those who are rich should boast that God has humbled them.
They will fade away like a little flower in the field.
The hot sun rises and the grass withers; the little flower droops
and falls, and its beauty fades away. In the same way, the rich will
fade away with all of their achievements.

Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are
unstable in everything they do.
Believers who are poor have something to boast about,
for God has honored them.

But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone.
Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as
a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind.
Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.

So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed,
you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.
If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you.
He will not rebuke you for asking.

Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it
an opportunity for great joy.
For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has
a chance to grow.

Do not be like the horse or the mule,
which have no understanding
but must be controlled by bit and bridle
or they will not come to you.
Many are the woes of the wicked,
but the LORD’s unfailing love
surrounds the man who trusts in him.
Rejoice in the LORD and be glad, you righteous;
sing, all you who are upright in heart!

You are my hiding place;
you will protect me from trouble
and surround me with songs of deliverance.
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will counsel you and watch over you.

Then I acknowledged my sin to you
and did not cover up my iniquity.
I said, “I will confess
my transgressions to the LORD “—
and you forgave
the guilt of my sin.
Therefore let everyone who is godly pray to you
while you may be found;
surely when the mighty waters rise,
they will not reach him.

When I kept silent,
my bones wasted away
through my groaning all day long.
For day and night
your hand was heavy upon me;
my strength was sapped
as in the heat of summer.

Blessed is he
whose transgressions are forgiven,
whose sins are covered.
Blessed is the man
whose sin the LORD does not count against him
and in whose spirit is no deceit.
